Ultimately, the answer depends on your individual needs. Conversely, you should turn your PC off if you rarely use it (once a week or less), because you'll get smaller electric bills and a bit more life out of your machine.ĭespite what you’ve been told from either side of the “should you leave your PC on overnight” camps, there is no correct path that works for everyone. So long as you reboot at least once a week, it’s okay to always keep it powered on. If you use your computer more than once per day or for a substantial amount of time, it’s best to leave it on. This factor alone is the strongest case for shutting your computer down at night. Dirty components generate more heat as well, creating a vicious cycle. And then you have the threat of dust – the other enemy of electronics. Your computer and graphics cards have multiple fans for a reason – heat is just bad for electronics. However, always keeping your computer on will shorten its lifespan regardless due to natural wear and tear. While this is true to some extent, the act isn’t as hazardous with newer machines. One longstanding common belief is that shutting your computer off and turning it on damages its components. As far as laptops are concerned, it’s typically okay to leave them on even if they’re plugged in since they rarely consume nearly as much energy as a desktop. So always turn your monitor off whenever you’re not actively using your computer. ![]() ![]() Note that, in some instances, displays eat up more juice than PCs. Budget-minded folks will want to save every penny so it doesn’t make sense for them to always leave their PCs on. Newer PCs don't require as much energy as older hardware but they still need a fair amount of power to run, especially if you’re doing intensive things like playing video games. If you’re trying to lower your electricity bill, it’s good to shut your computer off at night or when you’re not using it for long periods of time. Why you should turn your PC off overnight Leaving your computer on saves you from the quirks of sleep mode. This is why I always have my power settings set to “Performance” to ensure my PC doesn’t go into sleep mode when I’m away from it for more than ten minutes. More often than not, a computer in sleep mode tends to not want to wake up – necessitating a full system reboot. I’ve used every iteration of Windows, going from Windows 98 all the way to Windows 11, and have always had problems with sleep mode. That’s great and all, but anyone with experience will tell you that sleep mode isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. After all, sleep mode puts your computer in a low-powered state that still allows it to run background tasks. You’d think sleep mode would be the perfect middle ground for folks on opposing sides of the “should you leave your computer on overnight” debate. Those running remote servers for services like Plex also need to keep their PCs on all the time. After all, having remote access to your PC won’t do you any good if you can’t access files on the go. If you’ve enabled remote access to your PC via the internet, you’ll need to leave it on if you want to access it while you're away. For gamers, it’s good to leave your PC on overnight to download large updates or full games. This way, you can focus on whatever you’re doing on your computer without being interrupted. You can schedule virus scans and system updates to run overnight (or whenever you’re not using your PC). Having your computer nag you about system updates can be frustrating when you’re in the middle of a vital task. But if you don’t have the patience to wait even that long, you should leave your PC on overnight. If you have a PC released within the past five years that also packs a solid state drive, booting up from a completely powered off state often takes less than a minute. Granted, this is only really an issue for older machines. ![]() Double-click Install Fitbit Connect.pkg.Scroll down and click the option to Download for Mac.Install a free software application called Fitbit Connect that lets you download music and podcasts from your iTunes Library to your watch. Maybe one solely dedicated to cat videos. I think in twenty years we will need a second internet. What are your internet predictions for the next couple of decades? Obviously the internet’s changed a lot since these sites were active. We trialled MP4 but browsers actually handled GIFs amazingly well. The biggest challenge was how it would handle the 700 GIFs on the page. We target modern browsers, which is kind of ironic. We created an overly complicated pipeline that meant that the layout started in Photoshop, then SASS, then processed in Node with custom Post CSS modules, then went to the browsers where we tweak some more client side. The developer Anthony Hughes handled the server setup, worked on Node.js asset pipeline and optimisations. We also created some responsive rules so that the page would look good on any device’s screen size. I tried to capture some key themes and trends in each section.Įach element was then individually positioned with CSS. After collecting thousands of GIFs and text snippets I dropped everything into an enormous Photoshop document and positioned things into loose groups. I would dig through these neighbourhood directories and open hundreds of tabs at once (I had a nifty Chrome plugin) and would pull the GIFs and interesting text out, screenshot them and note URLs. For example the ‘Area51’ neighbourhood was all about science fiction, fantasy and conspiracy theories. GeoCities was divided up into directories called ‘neighbourhoods’. Technically, how did you put it together? I’ve been working on it since October last year. ![]() There’s not a whole lot of ‘nice’ or user-friendly web design in there but the archives are exploding with creativity.Ī pretty decent chunk of my lifetime. ![]() I started exploring the GeoCities archives-such as OoCities-and I was really inspired by what I found. Haridas and Elias had proposed an efficient bank of filters for audiogram matching in a digital hearing aid which has derived from variable bandwidth filter (VBF) structure with the help of Farrow structure in order to achieve lower arithmetic complexity. Another technique had been developed for the construction of tuneable bandwidth linear phase FIR filters with the aid of different polynomials such as shifted Chebyshev polynomials, Bernstein polynomials and shifted Legendre polynomials. To achieve reconfigurability and low complexity in emerging communication applications, an efficient implementation of FIR filter with the aid of VBW and fractional delay is investigated in where the reduction in implementation complexity is achieved by converting the continuous filter coefficients to signed powers of two space. The study also extended their proposal by incorporating a novel structure for band-pass and band-stop filters with the feature of having not only adjustable upper and lower band edges but also with a lower arithmetic complexity. In, authors had introduced linear phase FIR filters that have adjustable bandwidth characteristics with a fixed phase response. To this aim, George and Elias had presented a continuous VBW sharp finite impulse response (FIR) filter designed with low complexity and minimum distortion. In connection to the design of VBW digital filters, Farrow structure has been widely used in most of the literatures. More specifically, design of hardware efficient variable bandwidth (VBW) digital filters had drawn sufficient attention which aims at utilising minimum hardware elements during its implementation and consume less amount of power. In connection with different types of digital filters existing in the literature, variable or tuneable bandwidth digital filters receive appreciable attention to the researchers due to its ever increasing demand for developing reconfigurable systems which are necessary in almost all field of applications such as digital audio, spectrum sharing radio, trans-multiplexers, sonar, radar, telecommunications, medical, spectrum analysis and so on. So, to "Star Wars" fans who are now looking forward to hearing Hamill voice Chucky, make a playdate with "Child's Play" in cinemas this June. a deep voice completely different from his own naturally high-pitched tone. However, since this new movie also serves as a reboot of the 1998 "Child's Play", it doesn't involve Dourif and franchise creator Don Mancini. We knelt by the couch to pray on our knees, and Chucky sounded like he was. In the previous movies, Chucky had always been voiced by Brad Dourif. Hamill wouldn't have any problem voicing the killer doll since he did make his film debut as a voice actor in the 1977 animated film, "Wizards", and has been lending his voice to various film characters over the years (he, in fact, has had five voice roles within these past two years). "Star Wars" fans must be excited to hear Mark Hamill voice a possessed doll next. "If you're wondering who's going to play Chucky in the new Child's Play," Hamill said in the video. But Walter’s work on that film stuck with cult 1980s horror director Tom Holland, who wanted her to lend her voice to film a soon-to-be-iconic killer doll named Chucky.
